The Dangers Of Surfing

Although surfing is a very fun sport, it can also be very dangerous. There are many risks that surfers take once they hit the water from angry surfers to more life threatening dangers. Let’s look at some of the dangers you might encounter next time you’re out surfing. Marine Life The most obvious dangerous marine life would be that of the shark. They are big, scary fish with extremely large teeth. Although they are known for killing humans, it is pretty unlikely but even so, it is always better to avoid sharks and exit the surf until a signal is given to re-enter the water. There are however more dangerous marine life that may be lurking in the ocean. Sea snakes, Jellyfish and stingrays are all potentially life threatening and normally wont be seen until it is too late. The chances of accidents are pretty slim though and will usually occur if you have hit them or landed on them by mistake. Drowning Even the best of swimmers can come across a tide they cant handle. The waves are a lot stronger than many people realise. It is not just possible to not being able to swim the surf but there is also the chance of being caught up on the reef and also unconsciousness after a collision. Drowning is a real risk and takes many lives every year. It is always best to surf with a friend who can help you out should you need it. Locals This may sound strange but is a very big danger. The local surfers can be very aggressive. The best way of dealing with this is to follow the surfing etiquette and reduce the chance of an incident occurring. If you can’t behave yourself on the waves then there is only you to blame for the outcome. Rips Riptides or rips as they are more commonly known is a big hazard to surfers. They can sweep you off to sea in an instant with no chance of getting back. They are commonly found round surfing spots so always have someone with you in case this should happen. Surfboards Surfboards have a point on one end and blade-like fins at the rear. This makes them very dangerous pieces of equipment. For this reason it is very important to control the board at all times. Surfers breaking this rule cause many (sometimes life threatening) injuries every day. Sea bed The sea bed combined with the shove of the waves can cause very serious injuries. The sea bed may only be sand but when you get shoved by the tide it will feel life you have been slammed in to concrete. The same goes for reef although if it’s coral it is a different story. They are very jagged and will cut a surfer like razor blades leaving little pieces of it behind which can lead to infections. It all may sound too scary but in reality, surfing is a pretty safe sport not to mention extremely fun. With a little bit of safety in mind it can greatly reduce the risk of any bad incidents occurring.
